Beneath the Skin

Later that night, long after the club had emptied and the air had settled into silence, Vic found Jonny in her tattoo studio. She wiped down her station and kept her hands busy, ignoring his presence as the door creaked open and his heavy footsteps crossed the room.

“You told me you’d be in the dungeon,” he said with sarcasm in his tone. “So, here I am.”

She didn’t look up right away. “That was hours ago, Vic.”

He shrugged. “I fell asleep. But you can guess that didn’t go well.”

Jonny set the cloth aside and turned. “That makes two of us.” The tension between them buzzed in the dim light. Vic’s violet hair was damp, curling at the ends. His shirt was gone, tattoos across his chest and ribs standing out like carved symbols. Her fingers twitched.

“You still need that ink finished?” she asked.

“I need you.”

She gave a short humorless laugh. “Yeah right. You don’t even believe that.”

Vic stepped closer, his presence crowding her space. “Try me.”

What readers said

The author portrayed the interracial intricacies, as well as age differences, well. I found the characters to be really human and the romance believable. It wasn’t overbearingly steamy, and that made the climax of the story worth the wait.. (Maria – Ice Cream Castles)

I honestly had no expectations going in, but that was literally the best short story I’ve ever read. (Tanzania – Fire in The Blood)

Romance stories aren’t usually my thing, but this is much more than that. It’s an intimate look at how even people who love each other can drift apart. Bonus Points for main characters being people of color! (Emily – Don’t Say Goodnight)
